LZ Lambeau™ - May 21 - 23, 2010

_____________________________________________________________

In an effort to right a wrong that has lingered for more than 40 years, Wisconsin is creating an event unlike any other in the nation. LZ Lambeau™, part of the larger Wisconsin Vietnam War Stories project, will honor the service and sacrifice of thousands of Vietnam veterans, and finally, formally, thank them and welcome them home.

LZ Lambeau™ or "Landing Zone Lambeau" takes place May 21-23, 2010 when an estimated 100,000 Vietnam and Vietnam-era veterans, their families and members of the public will gather in Green Bay, Wis., on the grounds of historic
Lambeau Field, for a weekend of reunions, exhibits and activities.  The events will culminate in a tribute inside Lambeau Field Saturday evening, May 22, 2010.  Beginning at 7:30 p.m., the Saturday evening event will feature military flyovers, music, excerpts from the new public television documentary Wisconsin Vietnam War Stories, a tribute to the 1,244 KIA and MIA Wisconsin soldiers and a formal "Thank you and welcome home" from Gov. Jim Doyle.

For safety and security, tickets are needed to attend the Saturday evening tribute inside Lambeau Field. Tickets are free to Vietnam veterans and $10 for others. There is a $2 charge for processing each ticket. For tickets, call 1. 800. 895. 0071 or visit LZLambeau.org

All other activities for the LZ Lambeau™ weekend are free and open to the public. Those activities include:

  • On Friday, May 21 a motorcycle honor ride of Wisconsin Vietnam veterans will travel across the state from La Crosse to Green Bay arriving at Lambeau mid-afternoon. Vietnam-era aircraft will fly cover over the bikers as they make their way along the final stretch of the ride.
  • The Moving Wall™ - the traveling replica of the Vietnam War Memorial
  • Education Day on Friday, May 21 - High school classes visit The Moving Wall™ and museum exhibits set up on the grounds and   in the Lambeau Field Atrium
  • Exhibits of Vietnam-era military ground vehicles and aircraft
  • Music, speakers and reunions

This event has gained widespread support among veterans and veterans groups and has attracted nationwide attention. It is a chance for our veterans to finally be able to take public pride in their service and to receive the appreciation and recognition they deserve.

LZ Lambeau™ is part of the larger Wisconsin Vietnam War Stories project that includes an extensive outreach effort to veterans and communities around the state, a three-hour documentary produced by Wisconsin Public Television, and a companion book by the Wisconsin Historical Society. In their first-person narratives, veterans speak of their memories, their struggles and their losses. The documentary offers a perspective of military service that is neither romanticized nor demonized, it is simply humanized.

Wisconsin Vietnam War Stories is a partnership of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, the Wisconsin Historical Society and Wisconsin Public Television in conjunction with the Green Bay Packers, Brown County, and more than two dozen veterans organizations statewide. LZ Lambeau™ is funded entirely by private contributions.
